What is the Lantern Festival?

The Lantern Festival, also known as the Yuan Xiao Festival, is a traditional celebration date that held on the 15th of the first month of lunar calendar. This festival celebrates reunion of family and is considered a great day to spread the longing for lost of relatives, the love for peace, and out heartfelt wishes for happiness and health.

What are the special celebratory customs?

The traditional sweet eaten on this day is Tangyuan, that is, the sweet dumpling - a sweet round rice dumpling, made from glutinous rice flour that filled with red bean, peanut, or black sesame. It offers warm and sweet taste with every bite with family and friends around, symbolizes togetherness and reunion.

Since Ming Dynasty, lantern has been a traditional symbol in China. Nowadays, the most typical and popular one is hanging lanterns rather than the sky lanterns. People decorate their homes, streets, and parks with colorful lanterns of various shapes and sizes.

Releasing sky lanterns, also known as Kongming lanterns, is another cherished tradition during the Lantern Festival. People write their wishes on the lanterns and release them into the night sky.
